1. Labrador
A long-time, worldwide favourite, the Labrador retriever stands proudly at the top of any list of popular dog breeds. With their kind, gentle disposition, high intelligence, and active nature, they’re pretty much the perfect dog for anyone!
As well as being a great family pet, Labradors are the breed of choice for guide dogs. They’re also commonly employed in hunting, tracking and detection, therapy work, and disability assistance. However, Labs love their food, so it’s important for owners to exercise their pets frequently and monitor their food intake carefully.
2. German Shepherd
Coming in at a close second is the handsome German Shepherd. This breed is extremely smart – in fact, they were originally bred specifically for their intelligence. German Shepherds are active, curious, obedient and willing to learn. They are well-known for being a primary choice for police dogs.
If not properly trained, German Shepherds can be prone to aggression and biting, especially due to their highly protective nature. However, if they’re well-trained and socialised properly, they have much less risk of being a threat to other people and dogs.
3. Poodle
Onto a slightly fluffier breed: the Poodle! With three different variations – Standard, Miniature and Toy – poodles are intelligent, energetic and sociable. They excel in obedience training, and having originally been bred as water dogs, they love to splash around with their owners! Standard Poodles are the recommended choice for families with children, as they’re friendly and love to play games.
4. Chihuahua
The smallest breed of dog is also one of the most popular. The Chihuahua is a loyal little dog that is bred in two varieties: Smooth Coat and Long Coat. Chihuahuas’ temperaments differ greatly depending on their breeding, and some are easily provoked to attack – therefore, they aren’t recommended for homes with small children. However, they tend to be fiercely loyal to one particular person, so can make great companions for single or elderly people.
5. Golden Retriever
Another family favourite, the Golden Retriever is a big, beautiful long-haired dog. Like Labradors, they are kind, gentle and friendly, as well as being particularly patient, calm and trusting. Golden Retrievers are also naturally intelligent and athletic, making them the perfect family dog. Potential owners should keep in mind that Goldens can be prone to genetic disorders and health problems.
6. Yorkshire Terrier
Onto another small breed: the Yorkshire Terrier! These cute creatures have long coats and an active, attention-loving disposition. They’re smart, quick to learn, and full of curiosity. Yorkshires do tend to bark quite a lot, though – a problem that can be resolved with the right training. However, this tendency also makes them an excellent guard dog.
7. Dachshund
Ah, the beloved sausage dog! Dachshunds, famous for their short legs and long bodies, are lively, playful and determined. However, they can also be quite stubborn, making them a little difficult to train. They are also more aggressive to strangers and other dogs, but are devoted and loyal to their owners.
8. Beagle
One of the cutest dog breeds, the Beagle is also one of the most challenging! Their excellent sense of smell and tracking instinct makes them the first choice for detection dogs worldwide, but it also makes them particularly single-minded. However, their gentle, cheerful disposition makes them a lovely pet.
