Fortunately Indy survived a nasty tick bite, but that was $3,000 in vet bills gone in just a tick.

“Fortunately Indy survived a nasty tick bite, but that was $3,000 in vet bills gone in just a tick.”
We nearly lost our little dog Indy to a tick bite in her ear. She got very sick and we had to take her to the emergency vet on a Sunday. She was there for 3 nights and then she went back to our own vet for more care. The tick had such an impact on Indy’s heart that she is now on tablets for the rest of her life. We nearly lost our special ball of fluff to something so simple. After all the treatment and tablets, our vet bill was over $3,000 but we are so happy that Indy is now over the worst of it. $3,000 is a lot of money and this was an unexpected cost for us. So if you love your pet as much as we love Indy, be proactive and stay ahead by taking out pet insurance, just like we have now!

“We could afford to save Jessie’s life after she was bitten by a snake, thanks to our pet insurance.”
We noticed our cavoodle Jessie wasn’t her normal bouncy self and after 2 days of being lethargic and not eating, she woke up the morning couldn’t walk. The emergency clinic confirmed it was a snake bite. Then came the hard decision. We were told Jessie would need anti venom and a possible blood transfusion, costing well over $6,000 dollars. We really could not afford that, but thankfully we were covered under our pet insurance policy so could make the decision to continue treatment. Jessie is still on medication as her body continues to recover and our costs to date exceed $7,500. You never want to face a life or death situation with a young dog where you have to decide to have your pet put down because the cost of treatment is just too high. Our pet insurance meant we could save our much loved Jessie.

I wish we’d taken out pet insurance before Marlow accidentally got into the rat poison and needed intensive care.

“I wish we’d taken out pet insurance before Marlow accidentally got into the rat poison and needed intensive care.”
Our 3 year old maltese shihtzu Marlow loves to eat everything, including two pieces of rat poison she found well hidden after squeezing through a tiny hole under the kitchen bench. A few days later, we noticed she was listless and bloated and by 10:30pm that night, her breathing was laboured and her mouth almost white. So we knew we had to act fast. After a trip to the Small Animal Specialist Hospital, the specialist recognised her symptoms and a blood test confirmed it was rat poison. We were relatively lucky, needing only one blood transfusion, plus two days in an oxygen tent in intensive care. Our total bill added up to around $3,000 at SASH on top of the $800 from the local vet. Still, it could have been a lot worse. I always intended to get pet insurance but never quite got around to it. Now we know why we need it.

Scooty made it through a major cat fight, and we survived the vet bills thanks to our pet insurance

“Scooty made it through a major cat fight, and we survived the vet bills thanks to our pet insurance.”
I arrived home for lunch one day and found our cat Scooty on the front doormat coughing up blood. Thinking he had been poisoned, I rushed him down to our local vet where they discovered he had been bitten in the neck in a cat fight. The bite had severed a major artery and he was left fighting for his life after severe blood loss. Lucky for Scooty, emergency surgery, a transfusion and a few days in hospital saw him on the mend. His fluffy coat eventually covered the scar on his neck, and we were left with a bill of over $600. I wasn’t sure pet insurance was worth the fuss, but I’m glad my wife decided to get it as it certainly made life easier.
